Gashapon, also referred to as capsule toys, is a iconic Japanese toy format. It features a collection of themed toy models packaged as a complete series. Each individual toy is sealed inside a translucent, egg-shaped plastic capsule along with a product instruction sheet, and then placed in themed vending machines. Customers obtain a random toy by inserting coins or swiping cards, making gashapon gameplay highly similar to that of blind boxes and blind bags.
The randomness of the draw means collectors can never predict which model they will get from a series. This unique feature turns full-set collection and cross-player trading into a fun social pastime, firmly establishing gashapon as one of the most sought-after collectibles among anime and manga fans.
Boasting an extremely diverse range of designs, gashapon covers everything from classic anime characters to miniature daily items, offering an extensive selection for collectors. The gashapon market originated in Japan in the early 1980s. In its early days, it served as a niche platform for model enthusiasts to launch and commercialize custom model parts tailored for hobbyists. At the initial stage, the consumer base was small and specialized, with each product only selling a few hundred units. Nevertheless, the rigorous aesthetic and quality standards upheld by both creators and collectors drove a remarkable upgrade in overall product quality.
In the 1990s, the gashapon industry ushered in a major breakthrough, launching character-themed models from hit anime franchises such as Sailor Moon and Neon Genesis Evangelion. These bishoujo (beautiful girl) gashapon products quickly swept the market and gained widespread mainstream popularity. Among the most renowned manufacturers in this industry is Kaiyodo, a leading Japanese toy brand. In a recent interview, Miyashuichi, a senior executive at Kaiyodo, recalled that the monster and hero figurines available in his childhood were typically crudely made, with distorted proportions that deviated greatly from their original anime depictions. As a passionate model enthusiast, he found such subpar products unsatisfactory.
“I have no interest in shoddy, low-quality toys. What I pursue are lifelike replicas that perfectly restore the classic images of characters in anime and TV works,” Miyashuichi stated. Dissatisfied with mainstream toy manufacturers’ failure to meet high-standard restoration demands, he resolved to independently design, produce and sell high-fidelity character models.
Since its founding, Kaiyodo has launched nearly 3,000 types of gashapon products, spanning superheroes, Godzilla (the iconic monster from Japan’s Toho films), dinosaurs, animals, and classic characters from various manga and anime series. The brand’s exquisite craftsmanship and sophisticated production technologies have won global recognition. Its scientifically restored dinosaur model gashapon collections have even been exhibited at the American Museum of Natural History in New York. Despite the company’s superior technical capabilities, Miyashuichi emphasized that designing and producing anime character gashapon remains an extremely challenging craft.
In recent years, the gashapon culture has flourished across China. It first gained massive popularity in Hong Kong, where the 3rd Hong Kong Gashapon Exhibition was successfully held as early as March 2009.
