What Are Anime Figurines?
Anime figurines are models of anime characters, generally intended for collection, and their price range differs from that of ordinary plastic toys. Anime figurines refer to three-dimensional collectible models crafted from materials such as PVC, ABS, or resin, designed based on characters and creature designs from anime, games, films and other works. They are not simple children’s toys but sophisticated ACG merchandise, highly favored by ACG enthusiasts for their high fidelity, exquisite paintwork and outstanding collectible value.
Anime figurines sometimes also refer to unpainted resin model kits, a category of collectible models and Japanese anime merchandise known originally as Garage Kits (GK). These model kits require hobbyists to complete complex processes including sanding, assembly and hand painting, with a difficulty level far higher than regular model building, and they are primarily made of resin. Due to later widespread misunderstanding, the term “anime figurines” has expanded to cover all resin figure works including finished products, even though its original meaning specifically referred to unpainted assembly kits.
The term is also used as a general umbrella term for all collectible character models. To outsiders, anime figurines may seem meaningless, and they often find it confusing why a “piece of plastic” could cost hundreds or even thousands. For enthusiasts, however, anime figurines represent a passion for collecting, a form of spiritual sustenance, and a way to show affection for favorite anime characters.
In recent years, with the rapid development of ACG culture, anime merchandise has become increasingly integrated into daily life. As a core category, anime figurines have attracted growing public attention. More people are eager to get into this hobby, yet many jump in without a clear understanding of what anime figurines actually are.
