How to Make Action Figure?

What Is An Action Figure?

A custom action figure is a poseable figurine manufactured to your own character, IP or brand brief. The defining trait is articulation — internal joints at the neck, shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees and ankles let the figure hold poses, swap hands, swap heads and wield accessories. That single engineering decision separates an action figure from a static vinyl figure, a fixed-pose PVC figure, or a sculptural resin statue.

Materials & Construction: Why Custom Action Figures Need Three Plastics

PVC shell (body, head)

Soft polyvinyl chloride holds fine sculpt detail (fingers, hair, fabric creases), accepts paint cleanly, and has a slight flex that prevents cracking on drop impact. Used for the outer body, head, hair and large accessory shells.

ABS skeleton (joints, frames)

Acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene is rigid, fatigue-resistant and snaps into precise molded sockets. Used for the internal skeleton, joint pegs, weapon shells, buckles and any part that must hold a pose under load without warping.

PU resin / cold-cast resin (detail parts)

Polyurethane resin captures the finest detail at small scale (eyes, mouth, accessories under 2 cm) and is used for helmets, visors, masks and effect parts where injection molding is uneconomical. Cold-cast bronze resin is used for premium statues.

FAQ

1. What files do I need to start a custom action‑figure project?

You may provide hand‑drawn sketches, reference photos, character concept art or complete 3D model files. Our in‑house design team can build 3D sculpts purely from 2D references if you do not have ready‑made 3D assets. We will lock joint layout, scale and accessory list before moving to sampling.

2. Can you design fully articulated internal joints for custom action figures?

Yes. We engineer internal joint structures matching your figure scale. Joint positions can cover shoulders, elbows, wrists, waist, hips and knees. Joint tension will be fine‑tuned during prototype phase to prevent loose joints in mass‑produced goods. Interchangeable hands and weapon‑mount sockets are optional add‑ons.

3. What is the typical turnaround timeline for custom action figures?

Prototype samples take 10‑14 working days. After sample approval, mold building takes 22‑28 working days, followed by mass production within 25‑35 working days. Overall lead‑time changes with project complexity and total order quantity.

4. Which safety compliance standards can custom action figures meet?

Our production supports EN71, CPSIA and ASTM F963 toy‑safety compliance. All plastic raw materials satisfy phthalate‑free requirements for collectible toys sold into global markets.

5. What factors decide MOQ and cost for OEM custom action figures?

Every brand‑new action‑figure project requires mold‑tooling investment. Minimum order quantity is flexible and calculated according to figure complexity, total part count and accessory scope. Please send over your design brief to our sales team for a formal quotation.
