Super Dollfie, commonly shortened to SD, is a line of articulated ball-jointed dolls created by Japanese brand VOLKS, first released in 1998. Overseen by designer Akihiro Enku during its development, the term “Dollfie” is a registered trademark exclusively owned by the company.
Coined as a blend of the words “doll” and “figure,” the full moniker “Super Dollfie” was chosen to embody the brand’s pursuit of crafting the ultimate pinnacle of doll artistry. Celebrated for its classic 1/3 scale proportions and intricately artistic sculpting, this product line also holds a distinctive milestone distinction: it was the first ball-jointed doll officially labelled with the Japanese word ningyo (human-shaped doll) within its official product copy.
Super Dollfie quickly exploded in popularity throughout Asian markets. In the early years of its rise, its widespread fame led many enthusiasts and young collectors to incorrectly use the shorthand “SD dolls” as a blanket term for all ball-jointed dolls (BJDs).
