What Are GK Figures?
GK figures, short for Garage Kits, are a type of collectible anime model kit, and also a classic Japanese anime merchandise.
Originally, they are unpainted, unassembled resin kits, considered semi-finished models.
Collectors need to complete a series of complex processes, including sanding, assembly, painting, and weathering, making them far more difficult to create than ordinary model kits. Painting alone requires a certain level of artistic skill and the use of professional tools such as airbrushes and air pumps. They are a high-barrier-to-entry, highly playable, and highly collectible category of models.
Nowadays, the term “figure” has become more widely used, often referring to various collectible anime character models.
Then, how to identify high-quality GK figures?
1. Packaging Protection
Resin is relatively brittle and easily damaged, so genuine GK figures typically use multiple layers of protection, including foam padding and thickened cardboard boxes, rather than simple plastic or thin cardboard packaging.
2. Resin Material
Authentic GK figures mostly use high-grade non-foamed PU resin, with premium models like those from Japanese CAST resin:
* The white mold has a delicate texture with virtually no air bubbles.
* The color is warm and smooth, neither yellowing nor darkening, and not overly glossy.
* It feels smooth like jade or ivory, with a solid and substantial weight.
* There is no pungent odor during polishing.
Lower-cost hollow soft vinyl figures on the market are made of soft vinyl, hollow inside, lightweight, and inexpensive, but lack detail and are prone to deformation over time, showing a significant difference compared to resin GK figures.
3. Detail Accuracy
High-quality GK figures have extremely high detail accuracy. Subtle facial expressions, hair texture, clothing folds, stocking textures, and skin texture are all lifelike, far surpassing the refinement of ordinary PVC and plastic models.
